Executive snapshot

THE PROBLEM

Subscriptions numbers were missing revenue targets, despite predicted demand.

THE MANDATE

Improve conversion on TechDocs subscription program.

MY ROLE

Research strategy · Flow Analysis · KPI Boost

VALIDATED OUTCOME

57% conversion boost, exceeding revenue target.

Transformation Process

The app helped users diagnose the vehicle, but didn't help them repair it.

01 · Research

Use surveys to determine what will increase conversion at scale.

02 · Flow Analysis

Identify friction points and opportunities.

03 · Design

Reduce friction and enhance based on unmet needs.

Research Goal

Analyze why users purchase a TechDocs (OE Service Manual) subscription, how they use it and identify retention opportunities.

Methods

  • Survey of existing subscribers (n=86)

Key insights

Users access their plans frequently, for many different use cases.

Design Implication:

The entry point should be up front and easily accessible.

Users have multiple-vehicles that they'd like to purchase plans for.

Design Implication:

Make the purchase path flexible enough for multiple plans.

The program's offering and benefits is not clear to users.

Design Implication:

Enhance the product's introduction by providing a better explanation of the benefits.

Membership status and easy renewal are essential to conversion.

Design Implication:

Make plan and membership status and plan expiration timeline clear.

From forgettable to must-have:

BEFORE · HIDDEN VALUE

If users could find the hidden offering, they were given a lack-luster intro with a choppy purchase path.

AFTER · UPFRONT BENEFITS

Upfront access point showcases valuable component diagrams, with a flexible and intuitive purchase path.

Post-launch Outcomes

62% Revenue Increase

Without additional marketing efforts, UX enhancements were enough to hit our revenue target.

57% Conversion Increase

The enhanced flow convinced users to subscribe, with a healthy jump from 0.95 to 1.66%.

228% Increase in Visits

In-app access skyrocketed, suggesting friction had been dramatically decreased.

Reflection

What I would repeat:
Using research to understand the use case priori to analyzing the flow - This helped ensure my enhancements had the maximum impact.

What I would change:
Launch with A/B test messaging and presentation layer to hone conversion.

What's next?:
Use analytics to identify drop-off points to confirm multi-vehicle use case for further enhancement.
